Three games, three short reports!

Tuesday 26th September

NCEL Premier

Rainworth MW v Staveley MW

Admission £5.00/£4.00

Attendance: 81

This game gave me and Kev the opportunity to catch up with our old friend, Staveley boss Brett Marshall. Not seen much of Brett since he moved to Inkersall Road, so it was great to have a bit of a chin-wag!  We were originally going to Selston to see them play Alfreton in a floodlight Christening friendly, but we’re not too keen on doing friendlies when there are league matches available.  We will be at the Parish on Tuesday to see Selston’s first floodlit league fixture v Blaby.

Brett’s usual beaming smile was wiped off his face within 26 seconds of the kick-off when Tomas Poole put the home team ahead! The Trojans had a great chance to level on 16, but Wrens’ keeper Ben Townsend palmed away Tyla Bell’s penalty, and the loose ball was hacked away as it was played back towards goal.

Staveley had a few efforts fly past the home upright, but Rainworth were looking fitter and faster than their visitors, and it was really no surprise when they doubled their lead on 35, Liam Royles allowed time and space to pick his spot from the edge of the box.  H-T 2-0

The Trojans were more of an attacking force as the second half progressed, and when a defensive error gifted the ball to Kurtis Morley on 73, he calmly lifted it over Townsend into the back of the net.  Despite late, intense pressure from Staveley, they were unable to break down a home defence that had dug in stubbornly in order to protect their lead. F-T 2-1

Wednesday 27th

CMFL Floodlit cup

Eastwood CFC v Keyworth Utd

Admission: £4.00 / £2.00

Another quick goal at Coronation Park on Wednesday evening, Rory Smith bundling the ball over the line with two minutes played, after Jack Smith’s initial shot had cannoned off the Keyworth crossbar. Two minutes later Eastwood went further ahead when Greg Conn headed home from a free-kick was lifted into the 6 yard box. Keyworth replied in the 10th minute, Matthew Antcliffe running through a static Eastwood defence before driving the ball past Jack Walker from 20 yards.

Paddy Webb restored the Red Badgers two goal lead on 16 when a defensive error gave the striker a chance to shoot from the corner of the box. The ball flew in at the far post, but in all honesty the Keyworth keeper could maybe have done better. Having said that, the continuous rain meant the 3G surface was now very, very slick…

Antcliffe was on the scoresheet again 10 minutes before the break, finishing off a sweet passing move with a well placed drive from the edge of the box. H-T 3-2

Keyworth strove throughout the second half to get on level terms, and had enough of the play to merit at least a draw.  Extra-time would have been interesting, but sadly for the visitors, no matter how they tried, they just could find that finishing touch to any of their neat passing moves. Eastwood confirmed their place in the next round in the 5th minute of added time when Paddy Webb  ran in on goal and fired home. F-T 4-2.  Eastwood will now entertain Hucknall Town on the 25th October.

Thursday 28th

WVH Development U21 South

Kimberley MW v Eastwood CFC

Admission: FOC

The home team had lost their only other league fixture 0-10 to Belper Town, so had little expectation of getting anything from this game against near neighbours Eastwood CFC.  As it transpired the first half was a bit of a slaughter, Kimberley conceding eight without reply!

It took just 6 minutes for Kieran Knight to open the Red Badgers account, driving the ball home after he was allowed to run into the box without a real challenge from a home defender. Tawanda Mushambi grabbed Eastwood’s second 7 minutes later, then on the half hour mark, Leyton Nethercott drilled a 20 yard free kick past the Kimberley keeper to make it 0-3. Knight added his second on 34 and third on 38, then Mushambi added the 6th a few seconds later. Cal Finlow was in the right spot on 45, a ball across the goalmouth cannoning off him and into the net. Three minutes into added time, Bayliegh Reid added the Eastwood 8th. H-T 0-8

The second half was somewhat different to the first – I have no idea whether Eastwood stopped trying or Kimberley realised that if they continued playing as they had in the first period they could well be on the end of a league record loss, but the home team had the majority of the play as the half progressed. Their attacking efforts were rewarded in the 77th minute when Kieran Worthington drove the ball into the back of the net from the corner of the box.

Unfortunately the home team switched off as the game entered it’s final knockings, and Jake Pearson took full advantage, grabbing three close range goals on 87, 89, and 90+1.  Pearson had replaced Knight early in the second half, and until the final minutes had hardly troubled the home defence. F-T 1-11

Three games with 21 goals in total.  Added £6.30 to the THINK CHILDREN fund, that now stands at £223.40

Eastwood Ladies CFC 5-0 Kettering Town Ladies FC

Sunday 24th September – venue Coronation Park, Chewton Street. Eastwood, Notts.

Eastwood Ladies CFC v Kettering Town LFC

Competition:  East Midlands Women’s Regional Football League Premier Division

Eastwood Ladies won their first league game of the season last week, and continued their good form with a convincing win over their visitors from Northamptonshire.

It took just 17 minutes for the home team to open their account, Paige Singleton lifting the ball over the Kettering keeper from 12 yards. Eastwood keeper Vanessa Kinnerley had to be alert ten minutes later, diving to her left to push away a well struck free-kick from the opposition 10 shirt.

Kinnerley’s opposite number did well to keep out a Chantelle Robinson effort on 27, but the striker wasn’t to be denied for long, as a couple of minutes later her powerful 25 yard drive flew into the net with the keeper rooted to the spot. H-T 0-2

Robinson added the home teams third with just two minutes of the second half played, tapping home Holly Brindley’s perfect cross from just a few yards out. The roles were reversed for Eastwood’s fourth goal on 82, Robinson finding Brindley who ran to the edge of the box before firing across the keeper and into the far corner of the goal.

Another assist from Robinson for Eastwood’s fifth – this time she fed the ball to Amy Townsend whose cross-cum-shot deceived the Town keeper and flew straight in at the far stick. F-T 5-0

The win sees Eastwood sit atop the league on goal difference from Peterborough North Star. Eastwood’s next game? Away at Peterborough on 1st October!

A few words on recent visits to local games

Wednesday 20th September

Another visit to Eagle Valley, this time to watch Arnold Town Ladies Development FC take on Market Warsop LFC in an East Midlands Regional Womens Football League Divison 1 North fixture. Emily Obeng put the home team ahead in just the 8th minute and Jess Long fired home from the corner of the box on 16 to double Arnold’s lead. Shelley Marriott-Smith brought the visitors back into the game 8 minutes before the break, her powerful drive from 12 yards too good for the home keeper. H-T 2-1

Obeng added Arnold’s third a couple of minutes into the second half, but the visitors never gave up and were back in it on 58 when former Arnold player Emily Nellis drove the ball home from 15 yards. Arnold now had their backs to the wall and held on until the 89th minute when Marriott-Smith fired home from close range to bring the scores level. With 5 minutes of added time played, the home team’s defence was ripped open again, and when a deflected shot rolled towards the goal, they were thankful a defender was on hand to hack the ball away and despite their early dominance, Arnold must have been grateful to leave Eagle Valley with a point. F-T 3-3

Thursday 21st September

Admission £3.00 / £1.00

Basford Utd U18 entertained Dunkirk FC U18 in the F.A. Youth Cup. The teams looked well matched initially, but Dunkirk gradually took control of the game and went ahead in the 27th minute when Dylan Kubu prodded home from close range after the Basford keeper could only parry an Ethan Hunter shot. H-T 0-1

Things got worse for the home team on 53 when a George Boswell low drive flew past the home keeper to double Dunkirk’s advantage. We had to wait until the 4th minute of added time for the next goal, Louis Parkes firing the ball home low and hard from the edge of the box. F-T 0-3. Dunkirk will now meet Harborough Town Youth at home in the next round.

Friday 22nd September

Admission: £2.00 / £1.00

Southwell City travelled to Bilborough Town in a Notts Senior League Premier Division game and with the home team missing several players for one reason or another, City took full advantage and ran out comfortable winners. Town did take the lead in the 6th minute, Ellis Williamson slotting the ball across the goal and into the far corner of the net, but their lead lasted only 8 minutes as Romello Nangle tricked his way into the box before firing past stand in keeper Jack Cooper. The same player added Southwell’s second on 38, this time taking on the whole home defence before drilling the ball home from 12 yards. H-T 1-2

Nangle completed his hat-trick from the spot 10 minutes after the restart, then City added a fourth when Calum Law headed home powerfully from a right wing corner on the hour mark. Town did grab a second with 7 to play, Liam Stewart running into the City area before slotting the ball past the City keeper. Southwell had the final word though, Dalton Stevens firing home after he was picked but in the area. F-T 2-5

Saturday 23rd September

F.A. Vase time at Watnall Road – Hucknall Town hosting local rivals Eastwood CFC. Both teams are in the Central Midlands League South Division, and both looking for bragging rights in this derby game.

Teams:
Hucknall - Randall, Maxwell, Pitt, Leak (c), Henry, Phillips, Crawford, Banister, Smith S, Danso, Ashurst. Subs: Nelson, Hubbard, Hawkins, Jones, Jenkins

Eastwood – Walker, Conn, Thomas, Mitchel. Short (c), Brooks, Butler, Charles, Webb, Smith J, Betteridge. Subs: Smith R, O’Dowd, Allen, Jackson, Millward.

Referee: Scott Mason

Attendance : 240

Admission £5.00 / £3.00

Eastwood looked up for this straight from the off, and were deservedly ahead in the 23rd minute when Joe Butler nodded the ball over the outstretched arms of Mike Randall as the keeper came out to try and punch clear. With half an hour played, Hucknall went further behind when a Greg Conn cross from the right was headed towards the Town goal by Butler, and Jordan Phillips' attempt to clear with a low, stooping header went horribly wrong, the ball ending up in the back of his own net. (The goal has been subsequently awarded to Butler - and I reckon Phillips will be happy with that decision,). In added time, the Red Badgers added a third when Paddy Webb made a terrific run into the box before firing the ball across Randall and into the far corner of the goal. H-T 0-3

Butler added Eastwood’s fourth on 72, his instant control of the ball with his instep just inside the Hucknall area left him with just Randall to beat, and the striker did this with some ease. With 10 to play, Town did manage to spoil Eastwood’s clean sheet, Adam Nelson stepping up to fire home from the spot. Harry Allen came on late in the game for Eastwood, and the big man should have bagged twice, but hit one close range effort way over the bar, and dragged another inches wide with most of the goal to aim at. F-T 1-4

Friday 15th - Tuesday 19th - a few words

When I retired at the end of December last year, I thought would be able to put a little more time and effort into writing blog entries. As the months have passed, I find that although the time is available, the desire isn’t. A failing memory and other health issues mean that I really struggle to put together match reports/blog entries anything similar to those that my contemporaries are producing at the moment. My days of writing thousands of words on a single game have now gone – I will simply bundle a few words together on games attended, but nothing too detailed.

The latest “bunch” of games – Eastwood CFC, Selston FC, Eastwood Ladies, Basford Utd and Teversal Res.

Friday 15th September saw me visiting Eastwood CFC, who entertained Blidworth Welfare in a CML South fixture. After a goal-less, fairly uneventful first half, it was the visitors who opened the scoring on 55, Josh Bretnall reacting quickly to nip in and steer the ball home after a pass back to the Eastwood keeper never looked like reaching him. Greg Conn levelled for Eastwood in the 67th minute, a relatively simple tap in from in front of goal after the Welfare defenders had failed to clear their lines. Eastwood grabbed all three points on 68, Chay Betteridge lifting the ball back over the Blidworth keeper after his clearance fell to the Eastwood players feet some 40 yards from goal! Greg Conn had the chance to add Eastwood’s third on 86, but fired over from 2 yards after the Welfare keeper had spilled Jack Smith’s powerful shot. F-T 2-1

Saturday 16th was a visit to the Parish to see Selston take on Borrowash Victoria. Selson had defeated the Vics 6-1 last Saturday in the reverse fixture, but looked unlikely to repeat that feat as this game unfolded. Selston did take the lead on 11 when Lee Sutton fired home from 25 yards, but Idris Kabongo squared things up in the 23rd minute, after he intercepted a pass back to keeper Jake Ball and was given the simple task of rolling the ball into an empty net. Sutton restored Selston’s lead 6 minutes before the break, but Mark Green restored parity on 55, firing home at the far post.

On the hour mark, Vics went ahead for the first time, Tom Lewis firing a superb free-kick past the Selston wall and into the back of the net, with Ball a mere spectator. Carl Moore salvaged a point for the home team with 10 to play, and when Kabongo was dismissed shortly after, the visitors dug in to ensure they went back to Derbyshire with at least a share of the spoils. F-T 3-3

Sunday 17th – it was Eastwood CFC Ladies on show, Rise Park Ladies the visitors in the Women’s F.A. Cup. Not a classic, but the four goals saw another £1.20 added to the THINK CHILDREN fund. We had to wait 35 minutes for the first goal, but it was well worth the wait, Chantelle Robinson’s delicate chip from the edge of the box giving the visiting keeper no chance. Four minutes into the second period, Leanne Briscoe ran into the box and fired home at the near post to double the home teams lead. Briscoe added the Eastwood third on 80, driving the ball home from 25 yards with the Rise Park keeper rooted to the spot. Coureteny Csomor added the Eastwood fourth with 6 to play. F-T 4-0. The Lady Badgers reward is a home tie v Coventry Sphinx Ladies on 8th October.

Monday 18th - Basford Utd 2-2 Cleethorpes Town – second placed Basford playing host to NP Div 1 South leaders. Cracking game - click HERE for Basford’s full match report. I can’t add anything, except to say that this was a cracker of a game despite the awful weather!

Tuesday 19th was CML South action again, this time Teversal Ressies entertaining Eastwood CFC at Carnarvon Street. A decent turnout of 98 saw the Red Badgers take just 8 minutes to open up the home defence, Rory Smith driving the ball home as it ran loose 10 yards from goal. Paddy Webb grabbed a second on 33, a simple tap in at the near post. We had to wait until the 83rd minute for the Eastwood third, Adam Hassell on hand to slot home after the home keeper had failed to hold on to a well hit 25 yard free-kick. F-T 0-3

20 goals adds a further £6.00 to the THINK CHARITY fund - over £208 already - and it's not yet October!!!  Coming up – Arnold Tn Ladies Devp v Market Warsop Ladies, Basford Yth v Dunkirk Yth, Calverton MW v Basford CFC and Hucknall Town v Eastwood.

Basford Utd 1-1 Chasetown FC

Monday 11th September saw me at Greenwich Avenue with Kev – hoping to see Basford continue their 100% record in the NP Div 1 South. The car parks were full, so street parking was the order of the day.

The game wasn’t the best, but things were looking good for the home team when they went ahead in the 37th minute. A corner from the right was headed at goal, but the keeper palmed the effort away. The loose ball was fired goal-wards by Hutchinson, and although his effort was also blocked, Ashley Grayson was on hand to slide in and steer the ball over the line.

The lead lasted only a few minutes though – Chasetown were level a minute before the break thanks to a stunning 20 yard effort from William Whieldon that gave Saul Deeney in the Basford goal no chance!

Rainworth MW 4-1 Clipstone FC

Tuesday 12th, I made the short trip to Kirklington Road to see Rainworth entertain near neighbours Clipstone Welfare. “Clippo” are struggling for any sort of form this season, but as a team showed real heart throughout. The game was played in a tropical storm (slight exaggeration!), but both sets of players served up a football treat, despite the awful conditions.

The home team looked dangerous from the outset, and the only surprise was that it took them 18 minutes to break the stubborn Clipstone resistance, James Munson with the strike. The home team doubled their lead on the half-hour, Daniel Booth running through the visitors defence before firing the ball under the keeper. H-T 2-0

Clipstone never let their heads drop though and were back in the game on the hour, Jermaine Jatau with the goal. Liam Royles restored Rainworth’s two goal lead on 67, then a few minutes later Luke Walker was allowed to run into the Clipstone box unchallenged, and calmly slotted the ball across the keeper into the far corner.

Arnold Town Ladies 0-1 Rise Park Ladies

Wednesday saw me venture once more into the world of ladies footie, visiting Eagle Valley to see Arnold Town Ladies play Rise Park Ladies in the East Midlands Womens’ Regional league, and as per usual when at this venue, it was bloody freezing. The game wasn’t the best, with both teams struggling to put more than a couple of passes together. I do like the passion for the game that the ladies show though – a bit naive at times, but boy oh boy, do they love the game! This encounter was decided in Rise Park’s favour thanks to Vicky Belshaw’s successful conversion of a spot kick awarded by referee Lee Chappell on 65. F-T 0-1

Alfreton Town U19 3-0 Espial FC U19

Thursday it was the Under 19’s turn to entertain me! The game was originally scheduled to be played at North Street, Alfreton, but the first team had already played two games there this past week and with an F.A. Cup tie there on Saturday it was decided to move the game to Hucknall Rolls Leisure. That was excellent for me – just a five minute car ride from home! I know the Alfreton Town Academy have their SCL Youth Development League games scheduled to be played at Hucknall Rolls with 11:00am kick off times. I’ll be only too happy to attend if that is really the case!

We had a mass brawl with 15 played – something and nothing really, but the Ref did caution a couple of players, and that's all that was warranted. It was just a bunch of young lads getting slightly over-revved!

Morgan Brough was the stand-out player for the Reds and it came as no surprise when he put his team ahead in the 19th minute. A corner from the left wasn’t cleared effectively by the home defence, and when the ball fell to the feet of Brough, he rifled it into the top corner.

Brough was involved in the Alfreton second goal on 42. A quick breakaway ended with Brough running at goal before picking out strike partner Harvey Groves who made no mistake with his finish. H-T 2-0

Alfreton remained dominant throughout the second period, and the only surprise was they only added one more goal, when the game should have been put to bed a lot more comfortably. Brough was the scorer again on 77, his perfectly placed 20 yard free kick bulging the back of the net with the Espial keeper rooted to the spot. F-T 3-0

Catch up - a few note on recent visits

I’ve been to quite a few games in the past week or so – thought I’d put together a few notes on the most recent ones.

Thursday 7th September

Ollerton Town LFC 2-3 Nettleham LFC

East Midlands Regional Football League Premier Division

Venue: Walesby Lane, Ollerton

Referee: Matthew Picker

Abbie Murrell put Nettleham ahead in the 20th minute, and that was how the score remained until the 58th minute when Rachael Bell levelled for the home team. Hayley Brown then put Ollerton ahead on 65, but the lead lasted only a few minutes as Murrell added her second for the visitors on 71. Katie Davison scored what proved to be the winner in the 75th minute, a superb finish that secured the three points for Nettleham. F-T 2-3. A bit tough on Ollerton, but this was a great advert for the ladies game and I will be sampling this league again on the 13th when Arnold Town LFC take on Rise Park LFC.

Friday 8th September

Bilborough Town 2-3 Basford Utd CFC

Notts Senior League Cup

Venue: Harvey Hadden Sports Village, Bilborough, Nottm.

Admission: £2.00 / £1.00

Referee: Mr. Derek Spray

Assistants: Phil Wrightman, Jevon Swinscoe

Was at this game with Kev, Tony Squires, Pete Chappell, Rob Waite, Barry McKeag, Wayne and Luke Morrison. Great to see the66pow doing his Chariots of Fire tribute before the game – set the night up good and proper, did that!

The first half wasn’t a spectacle, with the only memorable moment being Anthony Graham opening the scoring on 27, his 25 yard shot too good for Nick Ivanov in the home goal. H-T 0-1.

With six minutes of the second half played, Town’s Conor Croft was alert enough to nip in and fire home after the Basford keeper and one of his defenders failed to reach an agreement about who was going to clear the ball…

Graham restored United’s lead on 57, firing home from 10 yards, then completed his personal triple five minutes later, nodding over the advancing Ivanov after the keeper appeared to misjudge the flight of the ball.

Croft had the final word as far as the goals were concerned - a free-kick was fired in at the near post and Croft was on hand to head home with just over 10 left to play. Basford did manage to hang on to their slender lead and returned to Greenwich Avenue knowing they will be in the hat for the next round of the competition. F-T 2-3.

Saturday 9th September

Mansfield Town U18 0-0 Doncaster Rovers

EFL Youth Alliance U18 North East 10:30am k.o.

Venue: Rainworth MW

Admission: £3.00 – no adult concession!

No goals, not much on the pitch to write about. These teams could still be playing now and it would still be goal-less. F-T 0-0

Basford Utd 3-2 Frickley Athletic

Northern Premier League Div 1 South 3:00pm k.o.

Venue: Greenwich Avenue, Basford, Nottm

Admission: season ticket

Game of the week – terrific fayre!!

Nothing much to add really – just the away fans were a bit rowdy when Hutchinson grabbed the winner in stoppage time. Also - isn't it about time the "scab, scab, scab" chant was laid to rest? 33 years on - give it a rest, please!!

Sunday 10th September

Hucknall Town Sunday 3-4 Crusaders AFC

Notts Sunday League Premier Division 10:30am k.o.

The times on the full time website must have been estimated - unless my watch is bolloxed, of course!

Michael Gartian put the home team ahead on 23 with a superb shot into the roof of the Crusader’s net. H-T 1-0.

Danny Blanchard restored parity on 58, running into the box and slotting past the Town keeper. Elliott Christie guided Tom Hubbard’s cross past the visiting custodian on 76 to put Hucknall back in front, but Ben Moore fired in at the far post in the 80th minute to bring Crusader on level terms once again.

The visitors went ahead for the first time in the game when Blanchard added his second on 89 after he was left unmarked at the far post. The lead lasted barely two minutes though as Christie bundled the ball into net to bring the scores level.

Christe had destroyed the nets as he fell into the goal after scoring, and there was still some work needing to be done to restore their integrity as the game restarted. It didn’t matter too much though as from the restart Wes Burke grabbed the winner for Crusader with what proved to be the last kick of the game! Cracking second half – biting cold wind, runny eyes and nose, but it gets you out of the house, eh? F-T 3-4

Nottm Forest LFC 1-0 Derby County LFC

F.A. Women’s Premier League Northern Division  3:00pm k.o.

Venue: Greenwich Avenue, Basford, Nottm

Admission: season ticket

Driving rain and bitter winds made this an uncomfortable afternoon at Basford, but at least the ladies never let the weather bother them overmuch, and we were treated to as good a game as could be expected given the conditions.

The games only goal came in the 58th minute, when Hazzanna Parnell managed to reach a ball played into the area before the Derby keeper, and sweetly lifted it over her and into the back of the net. Not much more to mention – Rebecca Thomas did made a great save late on, as Derby strove to get something out of the game, but the Reds hung on to claim all three points. F-T 1-0
